Overview

ArtCenter College of Design was established in 1930 and has produced numerous influential artists, designers, and filmmakers right up to the present moment. The institution recognizes the importance of state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure in their own vision statement.  When planned improvements to their South Campus were ready to move forward in alignment with their vision, Spatial Acuity was brought on board to implement the latest 3D Laser Scanning and Revit modeling solution to set the foundation for the project.

Process

Carefully scheduled around the school’s academic calendar, our team spent 3 short days scanning over 100,000 SF of multiple buildings on the 950 S. Raymond Avenue building.   A former supersonic wind tunnel with large open spaces and hard to reach trusses proved to be no issue for our Faro s350 series scanner, with over one-thousand-foot range and accuracies as staggering as 1mm.

The property being scanned consisted of multiple buildings and multiple levels tied together in any anything but standard way.  The project required several different scanning techniques given the diversity of conditions.  Our broadly experienced scan technicians executed the field plan faultlessly.

Result

The resulting Revit model contained just about everything visible to the eye, including piping.  The client uses Onuma as their facilities management software, and the Revit model was carefully tailored for immediate compatibility with this Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) program.

Aside from its direct utilitarian value, we think the model turned out visually stunning.
