Overview

To prepare for a projection mapping show at the New York Public Library, Spatial Acuity was trusted to 3D scan one particular historic space.  Projection mapping is when an anything but ordinary surface is used as the palette for large scale projection of visuals.  With the target surface digitized by our 3D scan, the projection mapping team can now prepare content well in advance of the show date.

Process

After a quick phone call and review of the project requirements, Spatial Acuity was signed up and on-site per the client’s schedule.  Using the latest Faro S series scanner, eight high-resolution scans were collected for a combined total of 350 million individual points.  In less than 2 hours, the on-site scanning was complete.  The individual scans were combined to create an immersive and stunning 3D point cloud:

Project Mapping consultants typically work in a mesh format, such as an OBJ.  A mesh is nothing more than polygon surfaces which can be created from a point cloud and is a fraction of the size.  In collaboration with our client, several iterations of the mesh were created until the most optimal Mesh was created, capturing every finite detail needed:
